About /

The Island of California

The Legend of California is set on a mythical Island of California during the gold rush era. Its open world, known in-game as Alta, spans roughly 16 kilometres across and is divided into 7 climate regions, each with its own weather, wildlife and landmarks drawn from real Californian geography.

In the north, Klamath and Modoc hold redwood forests, volcanic highlands and rugged coastline. The Central Valley and the Sierra Nevada run through the heart of the island, from farmland and foothills up to the high peaks around Yosemite and Mt. Whitney. To the south, the Pacific Riviera, Mojave Desert and South Coast trade alpine terrain for desert basins, palm springs and sun-baked beaches.

Across these 7 regions sit 362 named zones, the places you cross as you explore, gather, hunt and stake your claim. Towns, camps and other points of interest are placed procedurally, so no two playthroughs share the exact same frontier.

About the map /

What is fixed, what is seed-generated

Is the map the same on every server?
Yes. Alta California is a single, hand-authored landmass, so the terrain shape, coastline, and the 582 named zone landmarks are identical on every server.
Why are items, ores, and creatures not marked on the map?
Their placement is generated per server seed at runtime, so there are no fixed coordinates. The database tells you what exists, how to get it, and how rare it is, not where to stand.
What about mines, camps, and world events?
Mine interiors are assembled at runtime from modular rooms, and encampments, caravans, wandering vendors, and PvP caches spawn dynamically on respawn timers. None of these have fixed positions.
